Overview

Come explore the beauty and fantastic photographic opportunities on the Big Island of Hawaii. When you take a photo tour or one of Kathleen Carr’s workshops, not only will you be able to go to special locations on the island and photograph, but you’ll also learn many new and exciting techniques for personalizing your images - whether in camera, in Photoshop, or transferring your images to other surfaces and handcoloring them. Kathleen can help you improve your photography and creative vision whether you are a beginner or a pro.

Photo Tours
The scheduled photo tours have a maximum of six people, and because of the small number, you’ll be able to get personal instruction at the different sites. The focus is on making photographs. Custom photo tours can be arranged for when you are already coming to Hawaii, and can be from several hours to several days.

Workshops and Retreats
Kathleen teaches a variety of photographic techniques, from basic digital and film photography to more specialized creative techniques, including digital infrared photography, Polaroid and digital image transfers, Polaroid Emulsion transfers (Emulsion Lifts), digital inkjet decal transfers, hand coloring, beginning Photoshop for Photographers, creative Photoshop techniques, and fine art pigment inkjet printing. The workshops are not only in Hawaii, but also in California, Montana, and other locales.

Women’s Retreats and Coed Retreats
The Hawaii Women's Creativity Retreats are for women who want to explore their creative vision and learn new techniques in a small and very supportive group setting. Participants go to special places to photograph, work with models in nature, and have open studio time and instruction of techniques the participants want to learn. These retreats are limited to six women. A coed retreat is also available.

Online Courses
If you would like to learn ONLINE in the comfort of your own home, Beginning Photoshop and Polaroid transfer workshops are also available online through BetterPhoto.com in eight-week sessions. Soon to come is a four-week Digital Infrared workshop.

Private Sessions
Private sessions can be scheduled for any topic that Kathleen teaches, from beginning to advanced levels. Private sessions will usually be held in Kathleen’s studio in Captain Cook, Hawaii. If she is teaching or traveling, a session can be arranged for before or after a scheduled workshop in another location. Please contact Kathleen to set up the details.

When you travel to the Big Island of Hawaii, either on your own or in conjunction with a tour, retreat, or workshop, stay at Tropical Hideaway. Tropical Hideaway is a charming Hawaii-style studio apartment in a lush garden setting, with ocean views and a chemical-free swimming pool with waterfall. On the sunny Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii, you are just three minutes from superb snorkeling, diving, and kayaking, and near Kealakekua Bay.

Reservation Policy

Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Either full payment or a 50% deposit is required to reserve a space. Full payment is required at least 30 days before the beginning of a retreat, workshop, or tour.

Cancellation Policy

If a Workshop, Retreat or Tour is full or cancelled, your deposit will be returned in full. If you cancel more than 60 days before a Workshop/Retreat/Tour, you will receive a full refund of monies paid, less a cancellation fee $50-150 depending on length of W/R/T). If you cancel within 60 days of the Workshop/Retreat/Tour, you will lose your deposit unless your space can be filled. If your space is filled, you will receive a full refund less the cancellation fee. If you cancel within 21 days before the Workshop/Retreat/Tour begins, you will forfeit one half of the W/R/T fee, plus the cancellation fee. From 7 days or less prior to the start date, you will forfeit all fees and no refund will be due. Your deposit can be applied towards a future W/R/T—ask how this could apply in your situation.
