Overview
In 1971 Congress declared wild horses to be “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West”. Led by Lynne Pomeranz, author of Among Wild Horses: A Portrait of The Pryor Mountain Mustangs, these Wild Horse Workshops offer an unforgettable expedition into the natural habitat of America’s wild horses. They provide an opportunity to experience and photograph the beauty and nobility of these free-spirited horses against the dramatic Western landscapes of New Mexico and Montana. Whether it be stallions fighting for mares, newborn foals exhibiting their exuberance, or bachelors rough-housing to develop their skills to become band stallions, the social dynamics and herd behaviors of wild horses provide a variety of photographic opportunities. And it doesn’t stop with the horses as each horse range teems with other species of wildlife, as well! Depending on the location, guests may see elk, bighorn sheep, birds of prey, bears, wild turkey, and coyotes.
These workshops are open to photographers of all skill levels. Both digital and film users are welcome. The only requirement is that you be technically comfortable with your own equipment before attending. Serious photographers should bring an 80mm-200mm lens or longer. However, there are many beautiful photos to be had with a standard lens, as well. Although, photo instruction and some digital darkroom will be interwoven into the workshop, the emphasis will be on this unique photo opportunity. Artists, horse, and nature lovers are also welcome – with or without camera. Enrollment is limited (six to eight participants) to ensure individual attention and a relaxed atmosphere.
This year, Wild Horse Workshops is also offering a new workshop series: Enchanted Wildlife Workshops in New Mexico. Formatted for photographers and/or wildlife and nature enthusiasts, these workshops include wild horses, world-famous bird viewing and photography at the Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge, and other wildlife. They are led by award-winning photographers Lynne Pomeranz and David Cramer and are limited to ten participants.
Come experience firsthand why wild horses are considered living symbols of the American West.
